Details on Louisiana Casinos

In 1991 Louisiana approved riverboat casino gambling, it was actually the fourth state in the U.S. to legalize it. At that time the law only allowed for a maximum of 15 riverboats to operate statewide. A year later, in 1992, New Orleans added a provision to allow for one land-based casino.

In Louisiana, there are three Native American land-based casinos, and four slot machine-only casinos located at pari-mutuel facilities. In Louisiana video poker is permitted at Louisiana truck stops, bars/taverns, and OTB’s in more than half of the state’s 64 parishes (counties).

Louisiana riverboat casinos are required to remain dockside at all times, most of them are just stationary barges that are built to look like boats. Louisiana gaming regulations require that gaming machines at all non- Native American casinos must pay back a minimum of 80% and a maximum of 99.9%. The law requires that non-casinos locations with video gaming machines have a minimum return of 80% and a maximum of 94%.

All Louisiana casinos offer: blackjack, three card poker, Mississippi stud, craps, roulette, slots, and video poker. Select casinos offer such games as: poker, four card poker, Caribbean stud poker, pai gow poker, baccarat, mini-baccarat, Spanish 21, let it ride, casino war, big 6 wheel, Texas hold ‘em Bonus, ultimate Texas hold em, keno, and bingo.

The minimum gambling age for all casinos in Louisiana is 21, but it is only 18 for pari-mutuel betting at racetracks.

NOTE: If you win a jackpot in a Louisiana casino of $1,200 or more, the casino will collect 6% of your winnings for the Louisiana Department of Revenue. The state allows you to try and file for a partial refund, to do so you must file a state income tax return. Depending on the details of your return, the state may refund some of the money to you. The $1,200 threshold also applies to any cash prizes won in tournaments or casino drawings.
